The Power of Words...

We all know how good a well timed thank you feels, how nice it is when your boss says "well done" or "good job". It's great to hear that you are needed and that you add value. We all want validation and to be recognized but how often do we do this for others or ourselves?

The last few days the power of words has come sharply into focus for me as I started a new chapter of my life. Funny when we have to say goodbye or when things change we suddenly say the things we should have all along...it also became very clear to me that when there are big changes in your life, big doubts and fears tend to flare up and this affects our inner dialogue profoundly.

I have realized that we need to be aware of what we say...or don't say to others and perhaps even more importantly what we say to ourselves and about ourselves. The right words at the right time can touch someone deeply and may mean more to them than you realize.

So the question is:

Are you bringing positive things into your world but what you say to yourself and others? Or are your words those of a victim? Is your inner voice your harshest critic? We can all choose and that is the magic of it.

My challenge to you : thank those who help you, encourage those who need a lift and speak kindly to yourself and others!

Have a divine week!

Anel, thank you for this beautiful piece. I have always known that words are very powerful and can either make or mar someone for life. This is particularly true for human relationships especially amongst married couples who need to hear each other make statements and comments that shows validation.

I recall an incident that happened about 20 years ago (I can remember that far back because of the unpleasant words spoken to me back then). I was betrayed by a friend I trusted very much and he made some very emotionally damaging remarks about me that let to a fight. Before the issued was resolved he made this remark, "I am not surprised. That's how children from broken homes behave." This was shortly after I had shared with him in confidence that my parents were not living together. Just writing about it now still evoke some sort of negative feeling in me.

That incident taught me never to use hurtful words on people. I rather not say anything than open my mouth and say something bad about others. Have I been true to this philosophy all the time? Absolutely not, but to a very large extent, I have kept a lid on my tongue.

Words are powerful: I think that is why Ephesians 4:29 says 'let no unwholesome word proceed out of your mouth, but only such a word as good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give geace to those who hear'
This implies that wholesome words:
1. Build People up
2. Are timely : the right words spoken at the right time makes all the difference.
3. Kind words provide grace. As a leader your can either empower people and make them want to press on or diminish them and make them want to quite.
King Solomon once said; life and death are in the power of the tongue... Every day, we are shaping reality for somone by the words we use with them.
